Kids Under 18 Cruise Free on Delta Queen's Riverventures
Give your family something that they will remember forever -- a Family Riverventure -- as seen from the decks of an authentic steamboat. A family vacation aboard the Delta Queen allows the family to travel to see something that that every family member treasures -- America. The Delta Queen Steamboat Company is introducing Family Riverventures this summer, and kids under 18 cruise free.
Every bend in the river is like a page in a book, with a different story to tell on each page. Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher are names that bring to mind exciting and fun-filled adventures. Whether kite flying on the river or fixing a hot dog with all the trimmings at the Hot Dog Wagon after a cool dip in the bathing pool, or a lively game of ping pong out on the Sun Deck, families will discover many fun things to do together on Riverventures vacation.
The Delta Queen Steamboat Company (a Delaware North Company) is introducing new Family Riverventures during the summer months and Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays aboard the grand American Queen and the magnificent Mississippi Queen. With a choice of 3- to 11-night American Riverventures, children, grandchildren and grandparents alike will experience a unique adventure that Tom, Huck and Becky might have envied.
Families will enjoy the excitement of our special theme days where they can compete against each other and participate in lots of fun-filled activities:
-- The New Orleans Mardi Gras will come to life as you create a hat or mask to wear to our Mardi Gras festivities that evening and participate in a traditional New Orleans "second-line dance."
--In the Good Old Summertime you'll enjoy a picnic lunch with finger-licking food, lemonade, ice cream and all the trimmings-even the ants.
--At the Steamboat Olympics, you will compete against one another in exciting events like sack races, egg tosses, pie eating contests and more-even white wash a fence just like Tom and Huck did.
Families will even be able to create a Family Tree, and have the chance to be part of an old-fashioned melodrama where you sigh for the heroine, boo at the villain, and applaud for the hero.
Select family shore tours which offer adventures for the entire family will be included in the price of the cruise, depending on itinerary and length of cruise; some of these family shore adventures include:
** A Child's Day on the Plantation - Cajuns will share stories of their unique life and culture, teach you the Cajun waltz and two-step with live Cajun music; you'll discover what life was like for a child in the 1800's. Kids can do some chores: shelling corn, grinding coffee, washing clothes on a washboard, play some old-fashioned games, talk to a costumed interpreter, see a musket demonstration, and imagine what it was like to grow up there before the Civil War.
** Mounds, Masks and Mansion - Visit the world of Native Americans at the Grand Village of the Natchez, where you'll see a Natchez Indian house and ceremonial mounds. Your historian guide will lead you on a journey of interactive discovery with Southeastern Indian masks, Plains-style headdresses, red-clay face paint and much more. Then, visit Melrose and learn about the 1840s plantation culture. National Park Service Rangers will guide you through the property, including a furnished slave cabin. Complete a Junior Ranger booklet during the course of the tour, and earn a badge and become a Junior Ranger (ages 6-12).
Special onboard adventures with trained counselors have been designed for three unique age groups: the Pioneers (ages 5-8), the Adventurers (ages 9-12) and the Explorers (ages 13-17). Kids will travel on a journey of exploration with activities that are entertaining and exciting.
Children and young people can enjoy television, card and board games, art supplies, and books and magazines, and Big Brothers and Big Sisters will supervise tours and off-vessel adventures. You'll even spot costumed historical characters at some of the activities. A daily newspaper will provide details of the adventures being offered-The Pilot's Log for Pioneers and Adventurers, and The Explorer's Journal for teens.
Pioneers and Adventurers can earn a Cub Pilot Certificate signed by the Captain when they participate in special activities associated with navigation of the steamboat.
Children's menus offer a selection of favorite foods as well as some river specialties, such as fried chicken and chocolate brownies which originated on the riverboats. There will also be plenty of hot dogs, soft-serve ice cream and cookies and milk for all! .
Along with all the memories of their Riverventures, families will take home a complimentary family portrait and board game.
All of this, plus luxurious Victorian accommodations, three sumptuous meals a day plus snacks and late night sweets, professional entertainment with a different show each evening for the entire family and the friendly service of an All-American crew.
