Take Your Teen on a Sea Kayak Adventure in Canada This Summer
Don't want teens to be bored this summer? Learn to paddle a sea kayak with a teenager in Canada's Johnstone Strait, famous for its 250 resident salmon-eating orcas, exquisite beauty and sheltered inner waterways. Sea Kayak Adventures, Inc. is offering fully guided sea kayaking trips for families with teens.
In July and August a selection of 4 to 6-day trips for families with teens age 13 and older can paddle 3 to 4 hours per day. on the look out for bald eagles, leaping salmon and pods of orcas. Also known as killer whales, these striking black and white mammals are actually more akin to dolphins.
"The trip highlight is witnessing a pod of orcas surfacing near your sea kayak," says Terry Prichard, owner of Sea Kayak Adventures. "Paddling along with a six-foot dorsal fin rising and sinking next to your kayak is an experience you'll never forget."
Participants explore by two-person sea kayaks and on foot the glacier-carved waterways between Vancouver Island and the rugged mountains of mainland British Columbia. Unlike its "tippy" whitewater cousin, sea kayaks are a comfortable and very stable craft. No previous kayaking or camping experience is necessary. Kayakers camp on secluded island beaches where they can watch the whales from their tents.
Sea Kayak Adventures'guides have years of experience working with teens. "Parents can relax and socialize while we prepare all meals and lead activities like nature hikes, games and paddle skills sessions with the teens," says Prichard.
Additional activities include a visit to an ancient Indian village to view totem poles and remains of a traditional longhouse, and an orca field research station. The price is $990 USD per adult and $891 USD per teen. All meals, kayaks, paddling gear, camping supplies and instruction are provided.
