The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is powered by coal and steam. It is one of the last functioning railroad of this type in the world. Passengers travel through the wilderness area of the San Juan National Forest, following the Animas River to Silverton. It is a 90-mile round trip journey.
2004 Rates:
Daily steam service to Silverton offered May 8 - October 29, 2004. Adult fares are $60.00 and children ages 5-11 are $30.00. There is no charge for children under 5 years if they do not occupy a seat. There is also a First Class Parlor for those ages 21 and over, which serves refreshments and one glass of champagne for $99 per person. A Premium Motorcoach One-Way Bus Option is an addtional $5 per fare per addtional seat. Reservations for all trips are suggested.
The Cascade Canyon Winter Train travels a route north of Durango to Cascade Canyon in the San Juan Wilderness. Roundtrip trains leaving Durango for the 26-mile trip start November 24, 2004 with daily service through January 2, 2005 and March 9, 2005 through May 6, 2005. Running Wednesday through Saturday January 5, 2005 through March 5, 2005. Adult fares are $45, children (5-11) fares are $22 and First Class Parlor Car fares are $89 (only for adults 21 years and older).
