New York's Adirondack region is particularly beautiful in the fall, and the Adirondack Scenic Railroad offers an entertaining way to view the foliage. Passengers take a one-hour round-trip excursion through the woods and along the Moose River, viewing the scenery from open-window cars. Adventure-lovers can also canoe down the Moose River and wait at the Minnehana Loading Platform for a ride back on the train.
The train depart from the depot in Thendara, about 45 miles northeast of Utica, New York. Trains operate from July through December, and special events such as Murder Mysteries, Train Robberies, and Halloween trips are also offered. Special reduced rates are available for children, and kids under 3 ride free.
The Adirondack Scenic Railroad does an excellent job of devising a wide variety of themed events. There are Sunday dinner trains, rail and lake cruise combinations, Eco Tour trains, Murder Mysteries, Roaring 20's, Stealing a Bow trains, Fall Foliage, Halloween, Polar Express, Rail & Cruise trains, and many other types of train excursions to accommodate every type of person.
