All aboard the Georgetown Loop Railroad for a journey over the 95' high Devil's Gate High Bridge through the towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume. The loop was built at the turn of the century. At that time, it was the most complex railroad loop in the world.
Passengers travel on the"narrow gauge" railroad, which means the rails are three feet apart. Back in the late 1800's, rails that were three feet apart made more sense for mountain railroading. Although the towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume are separated by just 2 miles, the elevation difference is over 600 feet. As a result, the rail line had to twist and turn over 4 1/2 miles of track to gain that amount of elevation in such a short distance. The kids will look forward to this roller coaster ride!
Trains depart daily, May 29th-October 3rd, 2004 with two departure points. Silver Plume (2-miles west of Georgetown on I-70) departures are at: **10:05, 11:30, 12:55, 2:20, and 3:45. Devil's Gate departures (Georgetown) are at: 10:45, 12:10, 1:35, and 3:00. Same round-trip train ride from either end. Train reservations online are taken for Devil's Gate departures only. The round-trip excursion is one hour and 10 minutes. Train and mine tours take two and one half hours to complete and online reservations are taken for Silver Plume Departures only.
