A trip on the Great Smoky Mountains Railway is sure to be one of the highlights of your fall mountain vacation. Take this breathtaking journey through the countryside and mountain logging terrain of prior years onboard a train powered by one of four diesel-electric locomotives or by the Baldwin steam locomotive, No. 1702. A trip on the train will take you and your family along 53 miles of track, through two tunnels, and over fifteen bridges. The train's cars feature large windows for excellent photo opportunities. The cabooses even have been painted with the emblems and colors of their original owners.
There are eight Railway Excursions available including the Santa Express trips that run at different times throughout the year depending on the season. Each has its own special route through the Great Smoky Mountains. There are steam engine rides as well as Gorge, River, Trestle and Sundown excursions with such themes as: mystery, theatre, dinner, wine, caboose, photo opportunities, and train/raft combinations. The Thomas The Tank Engine and Santa Express excursions are always popular with families.
