Travel back in time on a journey into the lives of coal miners of Stearns, Kentucky. The guide will describe a day in the life of the miners, and you and your family will learn more about the days when coal was king. The Blue Heron Mine is a historical museum as well as the final destination on trip. You and your family will descend underground into one of the coal mining tunnels -- which will certainly be one of the highlights of your adventure!
The Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area is a great place to enjoy the fall foliage. The railway's open-air cars let you breathe the clean mountain air as well as take great pictures.
From May through September, the trains run on Wednesday through Friday at 10am and 11am which are both 4 hour trips, on Saturdays for two 4 hour trips at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and one 3 hour trip at 2:30 p.m., and on Sundays for two 3 hour trips at 11am and 2:30pm. In October, the trains run on Tuesdays through Fridays for two 4 hour trips at 10am and 11am, on Saturdays at 10am for a 4 hour trip at 11am for a 4.5 hour trip and at 2:30pm for a 3 hour trip, on Sundays at 11am and 2:30pm for 3 hour trips. The Halloween trains run the last three Fridays and Saturdays in October at 7:30 for 3 hour trips. In November, the trains run for the first two Saturdays for the same times as May through September. In December, the trains will run for the first three Saturdays at 11am and 2pm for 3 hour trips and all reservations must be made before 3pm the day before the departure. The fares include the train ride, the mining town and museums. Prices are currently $15 for adults, $14 for those over 60 (which does not apply on the Halloween or Christmas trains), and the child (3-12) fare is $7.50.
